1.Michael Connelly, The Brass Verdict - good book for the daily commute. Dialogues seem somewhat made up, but it's an easy read.
2.Anita Shreve, Testimony - Boring. Hardly got thru the first 50 pages and it's going back to the library. Anita Shreve is not for me.
3.Daniel Keys, The Flowers for Algernon - sad.
5. James Patterson, Sundays at Tiffany - so promising in the begining, it turned to the regular romance half way in. Well, it kept me company on a five hour flight to Phoenix, so it served its purpose...
6. Charles Finch, The Beautiful Blue Death - I love Agatha Christie's stories. Charles Finch tried but he did not come close.
7. Salman Rushdie, The Enchantress of Florence - in the tradition of the 1001 nights and Alladin. The problem is it was a great book for the first 2/3 and then it seemed as if the author lost interest in the subject and just wanted to finish it as soon as possible. Just like the main character, the book lost its charm. It's a shame.
8. Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones Dairy - of course, I saw the movie but never read the book until now. And now I only read it accidentally, because it happend to be in the house and I did not have anything else to read or do on that day. I gulped the whole book in a day. It was suprisingly entertaining and intelligent.
A book about Armageddon. About an Angel and a Demon that want to avert the end of the world, becuase, well, they kind of like the world the way it is - good food, fast cars and everything in between. Plus there is a problem with AntiChrist - someone misplaced him and he grew up without any influence from Up and/or Below and turned out to be simply human. He does not want to end the world, either. Very good book, funny if you can appreciate the English humor.
(William Tenn, "Time in Advance") - рассказ 1958 г.
13. Elizabeth Kostova, Historian - separate post 11.7.09
14. Robert Sheckley, The Status Civilization, other short stories - Sheckley was very popular writer in the 50th. I read most of this books when I was young but only now I can appreciate how timeless are his creations.
